Planetree: Our Philosophy of Care

We are a Planetree Hospital.
The soft colors, artwork, garden, and dozens of other features that help create a warm, healing environment reflect Shawano Medical Center's membership in the Planetree organization. The Planetree philosophy is to provide healthcare that is personalized, humanized, and de-mystified. Find out more about the Planetree concept at

Joining the ThedaCare System

Shawano Medical Center became part of ThedaCare,™ www.thedacare.org, a community-owned, Northeast Wisconsin not-for-profit health system in January 2011. Shawano Medical Center is a 25-bed critical access hospital serving 35,000 people in Shawano, Menominee, and surrounding counties.

Other ThedaCare facilities include Appleton Medical Center, Theda Clark Medical Center, New London Family Medical Center, Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca, ThedaCare Physicians, and other health care services.

Benefits of the integration include streamlined access to care for patients; minimal duplication of services, common electronic medical record; local Board of Directors for the hospital; new resources for the hospital Foundation, while still under local control; open medical staff for doctors; a no-layoff philosophy for the 400 SMC employees; access to more financial resources; more specialists, including cardiology, oncology and physical medicine; quality improvement projects.

In addition, ThedaCare has committed to planning and building a replacement hospital in Shawano. Planning will begin in 2011.
